The United Nations released its State of Food and Agriculture report for 2019. The focus of this report was to examine food loss and waste. Food loss is defined in the report as the period between harvesting and retail, and food waste occurs after the product has reached the retail space. The report found that over 14% of the world’s food was lost, and would never be consumed or sold. The purpose of this report is solely to inform world leaders; it is up to lawmakers to come up with a solution to this problem. Previous reports suggested that over 50% of the food grown in the world is lost or wasted.
